At the beginning of World War I, two mismatched strangers join forces in a common cause and find love along the way. Katherine Hepburn portrays Rose Sayer, a prim, spinster missionary who, following the death of her brother and the burning of their mission by Kaiser Wilhelm's troops, must leave on the only available transport, The African Queen. The "Queen" is an old, dilapidated steamboat captained by Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart), a drunken, disheveled and ill-mannered bachelor. As they embark on an arduous journey through East Africa, the pair struggle against the climate, the river, the insects, the Germans and, most of all, against each other.
